In what can only be described as a odd move, Nokia have decided to announce their newest flagship phone – a full 6 months before it launches! Must be what’s called commercial suicide for a company to do something like this just before the festive season? But perhaps we need to trust in the fact that Nokia knows better (yeah right!)…

The Nokia N97 does appear to be quite an impressive phone and from initial glances looks remarkably similar to the Sony Ericsson X1. Featuring all the yummy goodness of a 16:9 touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, 32GB storage and 5-megapixel camera it sure ticks most of the boxes for the fanatics. But and the end of the day it’s still, sadly, a Nokia S60 (5th edition) phone and we cant help but wonder if it will be any different from all the others. No details have been released regarding the CPU and onboard memory so it might very well suffer from the usual sluggishness that is Nokia.

It’s a slider phone much like the Sony Ericsson X1 but instead of the smart curved design the SE came up with it looks like the N97 folds up slightly on hinges. Our best are that this would be the first thing to fail on this unit. The active desktop is customisable and has nice social features like having RSS feeds, pictures of your top contacts and currently playing tracks all only a touch away. Widgets all over so should be extremely configurable with Nokia and 3rd party items. To be fair these points are based on pre-production models as shipments are expect to arrive in Q1 / H1 2009. A fair while away indeed, so you’ll need to stay tuned to hear if this will be the iPhone killer.

Nokia N95 8GB Edition

Touted as the iPhone competitor Nokia has recently released an upgrade to the N95 mobile phone. The new N95 now sports a whopping 8GB of internal flash memory, a larger battery and increased RAM (up to 128MB). Even better customers purchasing this phone will receive a free (mobile) copy of Spiderman 3 – something to help you show off the increased screen size (now at 2.8″ from 2.6″)

Of course since this really is a true iPhone competitor pricing is set at USD 796 although it is expected to be subsidised by the network operators. If you’re keen on a multimedia phone that offers WiFi, GPS and huge amounts of internal memory then go grab this little gem now.

Nokia 6555

Step aside Prada as Nokia now have the latest mobile phone for those style conscious users. Nokia has just unveiled their quad-band GSM handset, the Nokia 6555. Key features of the new 3G phone include:

External analogue clock
Video sharing
Camera with 6x zoom
240×320 screen
Bluetooth for connectivity and MicroSD for extended storage

Smooth lines, black finish and sexy curves are words you’d not quite expect to be used on the advertising of mobile phones. Retailing for approximately £139.99 the Nokia 6555 is slated for a September release. Not that Video Calling has taken off at all (remember all the hype about that?) but it is worth noting that it looks like the Nokia 6555 does not have an internal camera for video calls.

The Motorola Q has been touted as a “Windows Mobile 5 smartphone in a Razr-like form factor” as well as a potential Blackberry killer.Â

This great smartphone will be featuring something quite unique – a scroll wheel on the side.Â Yes I know it does not sound amazing but if you’ve ever used one of the Sony Vaio laptops or Blackberry phones then you’ll know how productive it makes you.

SMS 007 is a J2ME application designed for secure encryption of your SMS communication. It provides you with privacy against eavesdropping and message interception.Â Your messages will be sent in an encrypted form over the network and will be stored on your phone in encrypted form as well.Â To access the messages you will need to enter in your password.

W950 first Symbian OS-based Walkman phone

Sony Ericsson has only really been dabbling with Symbian phones when it came to their profession P800/P900 series.Â But the widely popular Sony Ericsson Walkman phones will soon be running on Symbian and the Sony Ericsson W950 will be the first phone to market.

The Sony Ericsson is a elegant slim UMTS (3G) mobile phone with a QVGA touch screen and 4GB on-board memory.Â By incorporating a touch screen Sony Ericsson are hoping to be able to push this device’s music capabilities as a touch screen will allow for easier control of playlists.

This UMTS phone includes 4GB internal memory with storage for up to 4,000 tracks in MP3, AAC, AAC+, E-AAC+, WAV and m4a formats, HTML browsing, audio/video streaming and 3D gaming. New P990 features and partner applications revealed

Since it’s obvious that you guys seem to enjoy reading about phones I thought I would bring some details of the much anticipated Sony Ericsson P990.Â This is slightly more focused towards the developers but features incude:

UMTS (3G)
WiFi
Java (CLDC and CDC) along with C++ for application development
Push e-mail service support
Anti-virus, firewall and VPN clients to ensure corporate security
Business card scanner
Streaming video and playback
Accelerated 3D grpahics

One of the most interesting features must be theÂ Business Card Scanner

Cameras in phones have any number of business applications for capturing and sharing images. The P990’s 2 Megapixel camera has been turned into a Business Card Scanner, using character recognition software to convert the scanned information from the card into a contact in the phonebook.

The fully equipped music player supports MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats, and includes a flight mode allowing the music player to be used when the phone is switched off.
