New Jersey School Implements iris-scanning

by Alistair Phillips on 24 January, 2006

Iris Scan The Freehold Borough School District in New Jersey has is protecting their school kids with biometric access controls.  Thanks to a $369 000 federal grant the district has decided to implement 242-point-comparison iris scanning on it’s doors.

LG has supplied the hardware while HP has supplied IrisAccess software which together form a complete access-control system for the building.  Each student is allowed to nominate up to four other people who may access the building.  This will ensure that only vetted people gain access.

But if disgruntled Jonny has a bone to pick with his teachers and decides to go on a shooting spree he is already going to have access.  So what is this really helping then?

UPDATE: Jason, from the Freehold Borough, has commented in to explain it’s actual use. The system is meant to allow authorised individuals, such as the childrens parents, to enter the school and pick up the kids. And for that I think it would work quite well.

A picture of the actual setup is available here.
