Everyone is developing phones these days that allow users to communicate via WiFi. Nokia has introduced the Nokia 6136 mobile GSM phone that can also connect to a WiFi network. The Nokia 6136 will be released in Q2 of 2006 and will feature a 1.3 megapixel camera and quad-band GSM capability.
The phone is primarily targeted at corporate customers who can deploy the phone for use both as a cellphone for external use, and as a VoIP phone within company facilities.
Unfortunately it looks like the VoIP client on the Nokia 6136 will only connect to Cisco or Alcatel VoIP hardware. Oh well that cuts out the investment we just made in a Nortel BCM system. No mobile provider would be too happy with Nokia if they were to allow you to make VoIP phone calls from any open WiFi network. Oh the revenue that the carriers would miss out on!
