Yeah it's just like Instant Messaging and not being able to chat to your MSN buddies on AIM. I can (barely) understand PABX manufacturers wanting to lock users in since telephony is critical but a handset like this should be open.

It is starting to become quite a pain now with me having a Skype, sipgate, gTalk, etc account and not being able to communicate to all from one service. What is it you were looking to use the Nokia 6136 for? Any alternatives you might consider?

Until your article, i wasnt aware that VOIP networks didnt share common protocols, architecturally speaking. Thats bad. And to think that a company would design its VOIP network around a single-user phone is absurd. But since VOIP companies like Vonage would lose money because of this phone anyway, why would Nokia care if all were hurt unstead of only a few? The 6136 was on my list and because of your article (unique among the recent reviews), now I get to cross it off the list and consider alternatives. Really--thank you for saving me the time and trouble.
